A side loader trailer is a semi-trailer that loads and unloads ISO shipping containers by itself. Two hydraulic crane modules sit on its chassis. Park alongside a container on the ground, hook on, lift the box onto the bed, drive away. No terminal crane. No reach stacker. No waiting for a hired forklift. The same machine goes by container side lifter, sidelifter, container side loader, and self loading container trailer. One equipment class, several names. The differences are brand history and regional habit, not engineering.
The demand is there because container volume keeps outgrowing crane infrastructure. According to UNCTADstat (data updated April 2026), world container port throughput reached 920 million TEU in 2024, up 6.9% year on year, after 0.6% growth in each of 2022 and 2023. Containers also carry about two-thirds of seaborne trade by value on UNCTAD and Port Economics estimates. Every one of those boxes touches the ground somewhere. Plenty of those somewheres sit a long day's drive from the nearest crane.

How a Side Loader Trailer Works
Every container side lifter runs the same basic cycle. The driver parks alongside the container, close and parallel. Stabilizer legs extend down on the working side and take the suspension load off the axles. The two crane modules slide along the chassis until they line up with the container ends. Chains drop from each module and hook into the bottom corner castings, the ISO 1161:2016 fittings built into every Series-1 container, eight per box, four of them on the bottom. Both cranes then lift together and bring the container over the bed. Minutes, not hours.
Hammar publishes a transfer cycle of 2 to 4 minutes for its machines. That is an OEM figure measured under test conditions; a real job, with positioning, chain work, and a walk-around, runs longer. Before any lift, the operator inspects the box (OSHA 29 CFR 1917.71 requires a defect check before handling) and confirms the marked gross weight on the CSC plate. OSHA 1918.85 is blunt on this point: never hoist a container that exceeds its marked gross weight or the crane's safe working load.
Side lifting is not a workaround invented by trailer makers. ISO 3874:2017 lists it as a recognized handling method alongside top lift, sling, and fork lift. The castings and container frame are built for those loads, provided the lift stays within the plated rating.

Main Types of Side Loader Trailers
The first split is how the machine moves. A trailer-mounted side loader is a semi-trailer: pin it to any tractor unit and the rig travels as normal road haulage. A truck-mounted side loader bolts the same lifting gear to a rigid truck chassis, which suits short shuttle work where one vehicle does everything. Tender documents in many markets file both under self loading container trailer; both run the same lift cycle.
The second split is the chassis frame. Lattice designs are the classic layout, light and simple, with the crane modules riding an open frame. I-beam chassis add torsional stiffness for heavier work. Telescopic or trombone chassis extend to cover 20ft, 40ft, and 45ft boxes on one trailer; Steelbro's Trombone line and Hammar 195 chassis variants both handle 45ft. The trick works because 45ft containers carry ISO 1161 intermediate fittings at the 40ft positions, so the cranes still hook standard casting points. The principle matches extendable telescopic trailers in wind blade haulage; only the payload differs.

The third split is the stabilizer style. Inline stabilizers drop straight down beside the trailer. Simple and quick. Leg-over designs reach across and plant the foot further out: Swinglift's Leg-Over keeps the container's center of mass at least 1 m inside the support line through the whole lift, which matters on less than perfect ground. Sidelifter Design Features
Start with the cranes. Each module is a hydraulic boom on a sliding carriage, and the pair shares the rated load. A 37-tonne sidelifter lifts 37 tonnes with both modules working together, not per side. The carriages travel the length of the chassis, which is how one trailer reaches 20ft, 40ft, and 45ft hook points.

Power comes from one of two sources. The cheaper route is a PTO on the tractor, driving the hydraulics whenever the truck engine runs. The independent route is a diesel power pack on the trailer itself, commonly a Kubota V2403-class unit around 36 kW, the setup Steelbro publishes for its SB363. A pack costs more and adds weight, but it frees the trailer from the tractor when one yard tractor serves several side loaders. Hammar lists PTO, diesel, and electric options across its range.
Chains and lifting eyes connect boom to box. Because they are lifting accessories, they sit inside inspection regimes: UK LOLER 1998 calls for a thorough examination of lifting chains every 6 months and of the crane itself every 12, with the safe working load marked on the machine. One field trick is worth knowing: two 20ft containers locked together can be handled as a single 40ft lift, which doubles move speed when a customer ships pairs.
Control on current machines is by radio remote with proportional levers. The operator stands where the view is best, feathers both cranes together, and stays clear of the load path. Hammar lists single-operator working across its range. That one-person crew is the core of the business case.
Design Considerations: Stability, Space and Payload
A side lift is an off-center lift. The whole container hangs on one side of the trailer for part of the cycle, so the stabilizer span is the machine's foundation. Wider span, bigger safety margin. The design rule across the industry is to keep the container's center of mass inside the support line formed by the stabilizer feet, the geometry leg-over systems advertise so openly.
Ground bearing is the quieter half of stability, and it is an engineering check, not a brochure figure. A stabilizer foot concentrates tonnes of load into a small pad. Hard standing handles it. Soft laterite, wet clay, or fresh fill at a remote African or Central Asian site may not. Buyers on unpaved ground should ask about foot pad sizes, outrigger mats, and the leg-over option before signing.

Working space is the third variable, and here the side loader holds a real edge. Because it lifts from one side only, it can set a container down tight against a wall or fence, a job a top-lift machine cannot do. It still needs clear room alongside for the lift arc, roughly the container length plus margin. Plan the site around that strip.
Finally, tare weight. Every kilogram of chassis is a kilogram off legal payload. Lattice frames keep tare low: Hammar quotes tare from 8.0 tonnes for the 195. Benefits for Container Logistics
The headline benefit is crew size. One driver does the whole job: drive in, drop the legs, lift, drive out. No crane operator to book, no forklift to hire, no second truck to coordinate. For a mine site or regional depot moving a handful of boxes a week, single-person working changes the economics of every move.
Ground loading changes the safety picture as well. The box is handled at ground level, so nobody works at height on top of containers, nobody slings loads over a cab, and the driver watches the whole lift from the best vantage point. Falls from height and struck-by incidents are where yards get hurt. Ground-level handling removes much of that exposure.
Double stacking extends the same trick upward. With the right option fitted, a side loader can place one loaded box on top of another, two high maximum. Hammar's stacking option is rated at 30 tonnes, and Steelbro's Double BridgeLeg stacks 20ft and 40ft units. Two-high is the ceiling. A side loader is not a yard stacking machine, and pretending otherwise ends badly.

The last benefit is utilization. A crane sits still between lifts. A side loader earns on the road between them, delivering one customer's box while it collects the next. Equipment that works all day beats equipment that waits.
Side Loader vs Reach Stacker vs Container Forklift
Buyers weigh these three machines against each other; the honest answer is that they do different jobs. A reach stacker is a yard machine. Kalmar's DRU/DRG450 data puts a current model at 45 tonnes in the first row, stacking five to six high, with working reach into the second and third rows. No side loader touches those numbers.
That reach stacker also needs a paved yard and a specialist operator, and the machine never leaves the site. It cannot collect a container from a customer 300 km away. A heavy container forklift carries the same limits with less reach. These machines win where volume is concentrated and the ground is prepared.

The side loader wins where the work is scattered. It is road-legal, self-loading, and needs nothing at either end but firm ground. It stacks two high at most, and only with the stacking option fitted. It cannot feed a deep yard block. Complementary, not interchangeable. Fleets that run both keep the reach stacker inside the port fence and send side loaders beyond it. One adjacent machine sits outside this comparison: hook-lift trucks handle demountable bodies, not ISO containers, so they never enter the side-lift decision.
One misconception is worth killing here: side loaders are not just for empty boxes. The mid and upper classes, 36 tonnes and above, handle fully laden containers at the plated 30,480 kg gross, and ISO 668 Amendment 2:2016 permits ratings up to 36,000 kg on newer builds, with the CSC plate governing every lift. The same gap-filling logic applies across specialized haulage, from RGN trailers for tall loads to self-propelled modular transporters for the heaviest moves.
Applications and Buying Considerations
Where does a side loader earn its keep? Anywhere containers outnumber cranes. Ports and rail sidings use side lifters for wagon-to-trailer transfer and overflow ground slots. Inland depots receive and dispatch with no yard equipment at all. Mines, aid programs, and construction camps run them because the site has no lifting infrastructure, period. The strongest demand sits in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and South America, where many inland points lie far from any container crane and road haulage is the only realistic link.
Military and disaster-relief fleets lean on the machines for the same reason: the truck brings its own crane. Ground loading is the point when the destination is a field, not a terminal, as the images below show.

Buyers should walk a short checklist:
- Safe working load class. The market spans 12 to 45 tonnes: Steelbro's 12-tonne SB121 for empties up to the 45-tonne SB450, Hammar's 195 at 25, 36, 40, and 45 tonnes, Swinglift at 35 and 40. Match the class to the heaviest box on the CSC plates you actually see, not the heaviest you can imagine.
- Container sizes. 20ft and 40ft coverage is standard on every machine; 45ft calls for a telescopic trombone chassis.
- Power source. Choose PTO or diesel pack by how the trailer will be worked: PTO when one tractor stays with the trailer, an independent pack when yard tractors rotate or the trailer works standalone.
- Stabilizer style. Pick for the ground you have: leg-over for soft or uneven sites, inline for hard standing.
- Chassis length and tare. These set your legal payload and road manners; lattice frames keep tare lowest.
